اللغة ظاهرة إنسانية واجتماعية تخضع للتطور في أصواتها وتراكيبها ودلالاتها بتقدم الزمن، وقد أثيرت مسألة التطور اللغوي من قبل علماء اللغة المحدثين، إذ قلما نجد أحد علماء العربية الأقدمين يتطرق إلى ذلك، لانشغالهم بالمادة اللغوية في حد ذلتها جمعا وتفسيرا، ومن أوائل من فعل ذلك منهم (ابن السكيت)، وقد سار لبيان ذلك في مسالك عامة هي التطور بالتخصيص والتطور بالتعميم، والتطور بانتقال الدلالة، ويحاول هذا البحث وصف جهد هذا العالم الجليل في ذلك.
