Overview
This study explores the use of political caricature in online newspapers as a form of visual communication during the 2018 Egyptian presidential elections. Employing a semiotic approach, the research analyzes signs, symbols, and both visual and textual indicators to uncover the meanings embedded in political cartoons. The study argues that caricature is not merely a form of entertainment but a critical discourse capable of reflecting public opinion and highlighting political issues in a humorous and condensed manner. The analysis focused on the rhetorical, cultural, and symbolic elements within caricatures, examining how captions and visual codes interacted to construct meaning. Findings indicate that political caricatures provided a wide-ranging commentary on the candidates and the electoral process, emphasizing themes such as limited competition, state dominance, and public expectations. Moreover, the research shows that online newspapers used caricature as a tool of indirect political criticism, allowing satirical expression without overtly violating publishing restrictions. The study concludes that electoral caricature is a complex visual discourse that combines political critique with cultural reflection, demonstrating the role of digital media in expanding satirical expression and enhancing public awareness of political issues.
