يناقش البحث الحالي العوامل التي شكلت الوعي النقدي لدى جبرا إبراهيم جبرا. (دراسة اللغة الإنجليزية في إنجلترا، وتأثره الواضح بالنقد الجديد، وبخاصة كتابات آي. ايه. رتشاردز (I.A. Richards)، وأرشي بولد ماكليش (Archibald MacLeish). وهناك إشارة أخرى إلى النكبة الفلسطينية (1948م) التي حفزت من اهتمامه بالأمة العربية، وحضارتها العربية، بشكل عام. ويناقش البحث باختصار- بعد ذلك- بعض القضايا والمفاهيم النقدية التي سيطرت على جبرا إبراهيم جبرا، وهي: النقد الجديد، والعلاقة بين النقد والإبداع، ومهمة الناقد الأدبي، وتأثر الناقد الأدبي بالبيئة والثقافة المحيطة، ومهمة الشعر، وأهمية الرواية في المجتمع العربي.
