بدأ البحث بمقدمة عرضت فيها لفكرة البحث وأهمية موضوعه، وأسباب اختياره، وأهدافه، وحدوده، والمنهج المتبع في كتابته، ثم بينت الجانب الفني للبحث. بعد ذلك كان المبحث التمهيدي، وفيه كان التعريف بعنوان البحث وبيان معاني مفرداته، ثم المبحث الأول وعرضت فيه لبعض آيات القرآن الكريم التي تنهي عن اتباع هوى النفس، وكذلك التي تنهي عن اتباع أهواء المخالفين، بعد ذلك جاء المبحث الأخير، وتحدثت فيه عن عواقب اتباع الهوى بشكل عام، وقد قسمتها إلى عواقب دنيوية، وعواقب أخروية..
