يهدف البحث إلى بيان معنى التفسير الإجمالي وأهميته وصوره، وإبراز التفسير الإجمالي عند الطبري، مع ذكر تطبيقات للتفسير الإجمالي عنده من خلال تفسيره لسورة آل عمران، وتوصلت من خلال هذا البحث إلى نتائج منها: أن التفسير الإجمالي هو: عرض موجز لمعنى الآية أو الآيات بعبارة واضحة يسهل فهمها، دون الدخول في أية تفصيلات أخرى، وأن أهمية التفسير الإجمالي عند الطبري لمكانته العلمية ومكانة تفسيره. وأن هناك ألفاظا يوردها الطبري دالة على المعنى الإجمالي، كما أن له منهجية متميزة في إيراده للتفسير الإجمالي، كما أن الطبري أورد التفسير الإجمالي على صور متعددة.
