يسعى الجاني دائما إلى طمس معالم جريمته وعدم ترك أي أثر يمكن أن يستدل من خلاله عليه، وان أهم ما يواجه المحقق الجنائي في هذه الحالة هو العمل على إثبات الوقائع وحفظ ما تمت مشاهدته والتحصل عليه في مكان ارتكاب الجريمة بكل التفاصيل واتخاذ كافة الإجراءات القانونية حيال ذلك كما له من أهمية قصوى في الكشف عن الجريمة ومساءلة الجاني وذلك باستخدام الأسلوب العلمي والتقنيات الحديثة مع الاعتماد على كفاءة هؤلاء المحققين في التعامل مع الآثار الجنائية التي تشكل فيما بعد الدليل على تورط الجاني في ارتكاب الجريمة.
