الحجاج له بدايات منذ القرن الخامس قبل الميلاد، ثم عند العرب والمسلمين، ولهم العديد من المؤلفات في هذا المجال، تناول البحث (بلاغة الحجاج في مقامات بديع الزمان الهمذاني) \"المقامة العلمية نموذجاً\". فالمقامة نصها حجاجي وضحت فيها ما تضمنته المقامة من أسرار بلاغة الحجاج، هدفها إقناع المتلقي، والتأثير فيه، وهذا يشير إلى جوهر نظرية الحجاج، - وهي دراسة آليات الحجاج وبيان وظيفة الآليات الحجاجية - التي ظهرت حديثاً على يد \"بيرلمان وتيتكا\" بوصف الحجاج البلاغة الجديدة.
