وسم عدد كبير من اللغويين المحدثين مؤلفاتهم بفقه اللغة، وعلم اللغة، غير أن قراءة هذه المؤلفات، تبدي أن هنالك تداخلاً كبيراً بين فقه اللغة، وعلم اللغة حتى إن القارئ لا يستطيع أن يميز الفروع العلمية التي تصنف تحت فقه اللغة، والفروع التي تنضوي تحت علم اللغة. ومن هنا جاءت فكرة هذا البحث الذي يهدف إلى مناقشة مفهومي فقه اللغة، وعلم اللغة، وبيان انعكاسات اختلاف هذين المفهومين على الدراسات اللغوية، والفكرية، وعلاقتهما بالدين أولا، وبالتغير المكاني، والزماني ثانيا.
