يتميز عالمنا المعاصر بتزايد مطّرد في مصادر المعلومات مقابل قدرات بشرية محدودة للاستفادة من محتوياتها، لذلك أصبح التحليل الوثائقي ضروريا جدا للمساعدة في تقليص المسافة بين مصادر المعلومات المتزايدة الوفرة وبين الحاجات المعرفية العامة والمتخصصة المتزايدة للأفراد. وتهدف هذه المقالة إلى تقديم منهج التحليل الوثائقي، بمعانيه المتعددة ومقارباته النظرية المختلفة والمتكاملة، مع توضيح خطواته الإجرائية، والتي يخلص المقال إلى إمكانية إثرائها ببعض الأبعاد الألسنية والنفسية لتفعيل الاستفادة منها.
