استخدمت xt كحرف جر في اللغة المصرية القديمة، وورد ضمن العديد من النصوص في شكل بسيط وآخر مركب، وكان يأتي مضافا إلى اسم سواء في حالة المفرد أو المثني أو الجمع سواء في الجملة الفعلية، أو الجملة الاسمية الصرفة التي تتكون من مبتدأ وخبر أو الجملة الاسمية verbalized التي تتضمن فعلا مساعدا ناقصا مثل wnn؛ وبالتالي اختلفت وتنوعت مدلولاته حسب السياق؛ مما دفع الباحث إلى تتبع الوجوه الدلالية له، والوقوف على معانيه المختلفة كحرف جر بسيط وليس مركبا
