5 Kennedy was a controversial choice and faced tough questioning during hearings because of his history of vaccine denial, including petitioning the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to revoke approval of covid-19 vaccines, calling the covid-19 vaccine “the deadliest vaccine ever made,”67 and receiving referral fees from a law firm that is suing Merck over the human papillomavirus vaccine Gardasil.3 Kennedy is an environmental lawyer who has no medical or scientific credentials and has never run a large organisation. The department controls federal funding for research (through the NIH), investigates disease outbreaks internationally, collects data on US health and disease outbreaks, and provides and publishes medical information (through the CDC).
