Overview
Arbovirus infections in horses, which include African horse sickness, West Nile Virus and various encephalitis infections, are of particular concern because they can have extensive impacts with high morbidity and mortality8,9 and, given the presence of competent vectors in the UK and the density of hosts, incursion and disease outbreaks are likely to have serious consequences.10 So, to assess preparedness and awareness, Chapman and others undertook an online survey of horse owners, disseminated through social media between May and July 2016; 327 people completed the survey in full. Given that 65 per cent of owners stated that they would seek advice on insect control from their veterinary surgeon, clearly the veterinary practitioner must play a pivotal role in raising awareness among horse owners and acting as sources of appropriate information about the risks and management of novel parasites and pathogens. [...]better awareness and training within the veterinary profession is an essential prerequisite.
