Overview
Samples of water from the public water supply of three boroughs located in the north of the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, were collected and analyzed for concentrations of fluoride. The three boroughs have been identified as dental fluorosis areas. Also collected and analyzed were samples of bottled water, which were classified as mineral water, spring water, bottled drinking water, and medicinal-mineral water. The mean fluoride concentrations in the publicly supplied water samples ranged 2.55.55 mg/l, which, for a mean water consumption rate of 2 l/d, far exceeded recommended daily allowances. For the bottled waters, a mean fluoride concentration of 1.09 mg/l was found. The waters that were bottled exclusively in the Canary Islands had a mean fluoride concentration of 0.49 mg/l. Spring waters exhibited the highest fluoride concentrations, followed by the mineral waters and the waters prepared for drinking.
