Overview
This thesis consisted of a detailed study of the wetland heritage values of the Canastota New York area and applies the compiled information to an educational trail. The wetlands in the Canastota focus area provided important resources to humans. Prehistoric man likely used these wetland areas as a hunting and gathering ground. The Iroquois tribes, including the Oneida Indians, used the area for food, fiber and plant resources. European immigrants used the wetlands for farming, fishing and hunting. Currently the area is used for farming, hunting, education, and recreation. These resource use themes were tracked over time and then applied to an interpretive trail to make the information more accessible to a larger number of people. Compilation of wetland heritage values of the Canastota area provides information needed by the Great Swamp Conservancy and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for use in planning wetland restoration and habitat improvement projects.
