AbstractPhysiocracy attempted to meet the expectation that « the intelligent world be aswell governed as the physical » (Montesquieu). Its views, concepts and logic permeated the political thinking of the Enlightment and the French Revolution as deeply as Rousseau’s Social Contract. Le Mercier de la Rivière’s Ordre naturel et essentiel des sociétés politiques, the physiocratic response to Rousseau’s theory, displays some of the conceptual invariants of the physiocratic discourse.
