Overview
Hensler discusses why the book Ball Four by former Yankee pitcher Jim Bouton is important. Barely two years after Kramer's opus was published, another book was released that could not have been more diametrically opposed to the chronicling of what turned out to be the last phase of the Lombardi--Packer heyday. This new release found its way into the canon of sports literature, where it remains to this day as deeply rooted as most any other book dealing with any athletic endeavor. Diligently taking notes to track Bouton's views on, among other things, racial issues; the struggle between labor and management; and drug and alcohol usage, the references to which were scattered throughout the book, as an adult, he was amazed at how his collection of entries took shape to tell a far different story compared to what he digested as a teenager. Taking place in 2016, this second look made me understand more deeply why Bouton's work is so important rather than accepting it prima facie as the tell-all book he had always thought it to be.
