«STUDI DAL VERO» E «DOCUMENTI LETTERARI». LA CRITICA NELL’OFFICINA DELLE NOVELLE DANNUNZIANE

Overview

Il saggio vuole illustrare le due ‘categorie’ esegetiche a cui lo stesso d’Annunzio fece ricorso per spiegare il significato della sua produzione novellistica, in particolare dei testi che – a suo giudizio – meglio resistevano alla prova del tempo: «documenti letterari» della sua evoluzione di prosatore e «studi dal vero» di comportamenti umani dettati da un’invincibile feritas, ch’egli fu in grado di consegnare alla pagina con singolare originalità rispetto al verismo e al naturalismo. Punto di partenza, il volume allestito dallo stesso letterato abruzzese per Calmann-Lévy di Parigi nel 1895, utile – soprattutto grazie al recupero di tessere preziose del dialogo epistolare tra d’Annunzio e il suo traduttore – per chiarire la voluntas auctoris: un’intentio, tuttavia, sedotta dalle strategie di un’attenta regia allettata dalla brama di successo, e qui (come sempre) desiderosa anche di garantire al pubblico un lascito non effimero. Quindi, l’analisi si è rivolta al confronto tra la mimetica arte dannunziana e il genere novellistico (con i modelli ch’egli s’impose, o che gli furono suggeriti dalla moda e del mercato dominanti). Per fare questo si è privilegiata la via della rilettura del suo itinerario artistico (in àmbito novellistico) allo specchio delle principali interpretazioni fornite dalla critica nel corso degli anni. The essay deals with two exegetic categories, used by d’Annunzio himself, in order to explain the significance of his short story writing, especially the part he considered still valuable across the years: literary documents of his evolution as prose writer and life studies of the human cruelty, described with originality, especially if compared to the verism and the naturalism. The collection of short stories translated into French and edited by Calmann-Lèvy (Paris, 1895) constitutes an important starting point of the discussion. As a matter of fact, the collection, together with the correspondence between the author and his translator, is fundamental in order to clarify the voluntas auctoris: an intentio guided by d’Annunzio’s thirst for success and fame and aimed at leaving a durable testimony to the reading public. The analysis develops a comparison between d’Annunzio’s mimetic art and the short story writing as a genre (with his models and the models imposed or suggested by mainstream trend and publishing market). The essay is oriented toward the study of d’Annunzio’s short story writing taking into account the literary criticism and of the major interpretations given during the years.
