Overview
Multidimensional scaling of student ratings of similarity among 18 descriptions of hypothetical students representing five student types of subcultures indicated five bipolar dimensions. The academic, collegiate, and vocational subcultures of Clark and Trow, which had been written into the student descriptions, appeared clearly as one of pole of three of the five dimensions. An intellectual orientation was sharply distinguished from the academic orientation. The nonconformist subculture scattered over four different orientations, indicating that it is not perceived by students as an identifiable subculture.
