Overview
J. S. Mill’s historiographical views have received little attention in the literature. The aim of this paper is to partly fill this gap. Mill, rather implicitly, attempted to typify the evolution of historical knowledge mainly in his premature writings. This attempt is crystallised in his view of progress while his views are influenced by Comte’s law of three stages as is exemplified in his Cours. Mill seems to have the firm belief that historical knowledge has passed through distinct stages which resemble Comte’s theological, metaphysical and positive stages. The paper points out these similarities, exemplifies Mill’s views on the evolution of historical thinking and illustrates how these views are crucial in our understanding of Mill’s progressive political and economic theory.
