Overview
Building material stock studies can help to implement circular economy measures by identifying future availability of secondary material and by comparing the environmental impact of different circularity measures. However, the accuracy of these models is often uncertain due to limitations in data quality, granularity, and assumptions made during model development. Validation of building material stock models with additional empirical data is rare. Here, we address this gap by comparing the material amounts on the single building level predicted by an archetype- and component-based building material stock model from a previous study for a number of individual demolished buildings with the amounts recorded in demolition data for the same buildings submitted to city authorities. Our results show a good agreement between the model and demolition data for the total amount and for mineral materials, but not for metals, insulation materials and wood. The findings highlight the importance of further work validating existing building material stock models and warrant caution when using predictions of material amounts for specific materials on individual building level.
