Rethinking Intellectual History and Reading Texts

Overview
Intellectual history has often been patterned on approaches used in other historical fields. Most recently, this has taken the form of a social history of ideas. The limitations of this approach are explored. The reading & interpretation of texts with complex intellectual content is a central focus for the discipline; this can take the form either of a documentary history or a dialogue with the texts. The documentary approach has been dominant, but has led to an oversimplification of ideas & readings. A full reading of a text requires attention to six distinct contexts: intentions, motivations, society, culture, the corpus, & structure. All these concerns should be included in an approach that gives appropriate attention to both documentary & dialogic concerns. W. H. Stoddard.
