Overview
In a recent interview, Steve Schroeder, outgoing CEO at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, discusses the foundation's achievements during his tenure, public health, health insurance coverage, and end-of-life care. Schroeder said that when he arrived, the foundation held assets of $2.6 billion. By early 2002 that total had grown to $9.3 billion. The foundation's mission is to improve health and health care for the American people. Schroeder says the foundation's most important achievement during his stewardship was the establishment of health as an equal partner with health care. He sees the US on a collision course between available resources and increased demand for health services. The baby boomers are nearing retirement and are less willing to accept, as did so many of their parents, the inevitable physical infirmities that come with aging.
