Overview
Coastal areas, once predominantly reliant on fisheries and agriculture, have undergone significant transformation into zones of marine tourism. While creating job opportunities and generating income, this shift has also triggered adverse social, cultural, and environmental impacts. Focusing on Pahawang Island, Indonesia, this research examines the socio-economic and ecological consequences of transitioning from a fishing village to a marine tourism village. It employs qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. This study provides an in-depth understanding of this transformation. The study shows that the transformation from a fishing village to a marine tourism village on Pahawang Island has undergone the first four stages, as described in the critical paper by Butler (1980). Currently, Pahawang Island is in a post-stagnation stage. The research findings reveal that marine tourism has improved local livelihoods through tourism activities, expanded employment opportunities, and increased access to goods and services.However, the transition has disrupted social cohesion, diminished adherence to traditional customs, and contributed to coastal pollution. Furthermore, conflicts over land ownership and access between tourism investors and the local community have escalated, resulting in social tensions and occasional violence. These findings underscore the need for sustainable tourism development strategies that balance economic benefits with social and environmental preservation.
