Overview
The sorghum aphid,
Melanaphis sorghi
, is one of the main pests affecting sorghum, (
Sorghum bicolor
L. Moench, Poaceae), in Mexico. The control of its populations predominantly relies on synthetic insecticides; however, new alternatives such as plant extracts, are being actively explored. This study aimed to evaluate the insecticidal effects of ethyl acetate and methanol extracts from
Salvia rosmarinus
leaves using artificial diet bioassays against
M. sorghi
. Additionally, the chemical compounds in both extracts were identified using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). The results showed that after 72 h, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts demonstrated insecticidal activities of 68% and 88%, respectively. HPLC analysis identified polyphenolic compounds, flavonoids, and caffeoylquinic acid derivatives as the main groups in the extracts. These compounds suggest that
S. rosmarinus
extracts offer a promising ecological alternative for controlling
M. sorghi
, supporting integrated pest management strategies that reduce synthetic insecticide reliance while promoting environmental sustainability.
