Overview
By inquiring into word-related practices for what is often rather casually typified as \"the religion of the word\", this article seeks to contribute to an emerging history of Lutheran identities and memory culture. It draws particular attention to the importance of Luther's and other leading reformers' handwritten autographs and inscriptions as mediated physical remains which were intensely treasured by their followers. These \"grapho-relics\" need to be integrated into our understanding of the distinct spiritual as well as cultic nature of Lutheranism, which was developed by Luther and adapted by Lutherans for generations to come.
