Overview
Discusses the relationship between humour and aesthetic experience. The author studies the nature and purpose of aesthetic education, defines humor, and studies the characteristics that humour and aesthetic experience share, including play, imagination, and the invocation of taste and personal preference. He suggests that humor differs from aesthetic experience in that it is designed to create laughter as well as pleasure, beauty is not a central concern, the experience of humor is primarily social, and it is linked to practicalities and personal motives, and concludes by asserting that the shift in cognition prompted by aesthetic experience implies change on a deeper level than the shift produced by humor, with reference to Vincent van Gogh;s 'The Starry Night' (1889) and René Magritte's 'The Rape'.
