Overview
Many chronic diseases are controllable; however, patients don't often adhere to treatment. A key factor in compliance (how well one follows a prescribed medication or therapy) is the personal relationship between physician and patient. Thus, the objective of this paper was to evaluate the adherence in chronic disease patients followed their prescribed medication or therapy as well as the relationship with their doctors, in public and private health institutions. The sample size was 200 patients. The assessment tools used were the Therapeutic Adherence Scale and a questionnaire designed to appraise physician-patient relationship. The results indicated that patients were more compliant when they were treated in public institutions. Certain items of questionnaire showed statistically significant differences. When patients receive information regarding the treatment, they show a greater compliance than when the physician focuses on the disease.
