Overview
Wind band in Canada has been under scrutiny due to a lack of diversity in programming practices. Shallow solutions such as diversity quotas are ineffective and risk tokenization. A pedagogical reckoning hinging on empathy, positionality, and contextualization is necessary for band directors who wish to create an environment of belonging and identity recognition in their ensembles. This pedagogical revolution requires personal reflection, risk taking, and vulnerability to foster a diverse, identity-rich future for wind band.
