Overview
Almost all of Spielberg’s films could aptly be classified as family-based narratives that center on the tensions, fissures, and breakdowns within domestic relationships, thereby qualifying as melodramas in addition to the genres they ostensibly inhabit. Traditionally, movie melodramas focus on either an individual (usually a woman) or a couple “victimized by repressive and inequitable social situations, particularly those involving marriage, occupation and the nuclear family” (Schatz, Hollywood Genres 222). Its emphasis on the family, a unit bound and defined by broad issues of cultural demarcation and signification, endows the melodrama with the potential for social commentary made palatable to middle-class
