Overview
Tibetan history following the imperial period has not been as extensively studied in Japan as much as other periods of Tibetan history, but scholars of Buddhist studies (or Buddhist history) and oriental history have produced research from different perspectives and interests. As discussed, the main Buddhist studies and oriental historical studies on this period are those of Hadano and Satō, whose works are still important today. Even today, research is generally continued separately in the fields of both Buddhist studies and oriental history. While each field has maintained its previous framework, the two fields of interest have moved closer in that they are based primarily on Tibetan texts as more of these texts have become available. In addition, several new developments have emerged, especially since 1990, including research based on texts that were not available, field research in Tibetan areas that was not possible in the time of Hadano and Satō, and studies using Tangut texts other than Chinese and Tibetan.
