Overview
This chapter looks into the issue of modern patriotism while referencing Giorgio Agamben's reflections. The reflection largely revolves around the linguists' difficulty in identifying Gypsy speech as anything other than an “argot” and Gypsies themselves as a hybrid. The chapter explains how patriotism and nationalism are gradually being dissociated from one another with the breakup of nations and the growing recognition of their artificiality. Patriotism becomes more difficult to instill as national interests are increasingly defined in economic terms, while the war primarily aims to protect corporate interests or ensure natural resources. The chapter also considers the destructive effects of scientific materialism on the ideology of humanism.
