Star-Delta Multi-Port Converter Topology and Its Modulation Strategy for Offshore Wind Power Applications

Overview
Aiming at the trade-off between multi-port multi-frequency interconnection, economy and control complexity in the offshore wind power fractional frequency transmission system, this paper proposes a Star-Delta Multi-Port converter topology (SDMP-MMC) and its modulation strategy for offshore wind power applications. By introducing auxiliary bridge arms into the AC systems on both sides, the topology can be configured into a star-delta structure, which enables AC-AC-DC conversion and outputs a DC voltage twice the rated amplitude. In addition, the SDMP-MMC can alternately multiplex the submodules of the intermediate bridge arm to the upper and lower bridge arms through commutation branches, thus significantly reducing the usage of power devices and capacitors, and greatly improving the economy of the converter. To guarantee the stable operation of the SDMP-MMC, a customized control strategy is developed. Simulation tests conducted using MATLAB/Simulink confirm the effectiveness of the proposed topology and its associated control strategy.
