Overview
Plato cites the circle as the perfect shape, as does Saint Augustine. The story of Buddha's stupa, yin and yang, Celtic tradition, the tales of One Thousand and One Nights, the geometry of Dante's Divine Comedy, the Greek island of Cythera, the Garden of Venus, the movement of the stars and birds' nests are all examples that demonstrate the power of this primordial figure. The circle is one of the foundations of our Western civilisation. As early as the 7th century BCE, the dances of the Bacchantes formed a circle that prefigured the theatre. From ancient Dionysian round dances to the most contemporary stage designs, the circle perfectly spatialises representation. We have limited our study to the circular stage in the 21st century, with a few references to historical examples from the second half of the 20th century, addressing: permanent theatre, nomadic theatre, ephemeral theatre, scenography with spectators around the circle or inside the circle. The various contributions gathered here, most often linked to concrete experiences, shed light on the importance of this use of circular space today and open up perspectives for future research.
