Overview
This paper examines the use of metaphors in Arabic political news discourse, focusing particularly on the headlines of the news articles relating to the Egyptian political situation in the period from June 2012 to October 2013. Metaphors are skilfully manipulated in the headlines to influence the public stance towards several events and entities including Egypt, MB, Morsi, the June30 th uprising, A1-Sisi and the Armed Forces. The findings of this study reveal that metaphors are used as strategies in Arabic political news discourse. The study, then, provides an evidence of similarity between Arabic and English political news discourse since the use of metaphors for persuasion effects in English political news discourse is evidenced in many studies. In addition, insights gained from this study feed back into the conceptual metaphor theory by providing further evidence to the universality of metaphors.
