تحاجج هذه المقالة بأن صعود الصين مسار معقد ولا خطي، ولا يمكن فهمها عبر الفرضيات الاختزالية التي تدافع عنها المقاربات العقلانية السائدة (الواقعية، المؤسساتية والبنائية). وهي تسعى إلى إقحام نظرية التعقد كمقاربة بديلة للظواهر اللاخطية في عالم متزايد التعقد، بما في ذلك صعود الصين. تنقسم المقالة إلى جزئين أساسيين. يناقش الجزء الأول المقاربات السائدة لصعود الصين، ويصنفها في فريقين: فريق المتشائمين الذين يحاججون بأن صعود الصين لن يكون سلميًّا؛ وفريق المتفائلين الذين يأملون عكس ذلك. أما الجزء الثاني فيسعى إلى تسليط الضوء على الاستبصارات التي تزودنا بها نظرية التعقد في العلاقات الدولية حيال صعود الصين.
