أدب الرحلة رافد من روافد الأدب العربي؛ يقوم فيه الرحالة بوصف دقيق لما يشاهده من عادات وتقاليد وسلوكيات الشعوب المختلفة؛ يعد إبداع \"شمس وليل\" من أعمال محمود تيمور التجريبية؛ إذ يحشد فيها صورا وصفية كثيرة لرحلته إلى السويد استوحاها الكاتب من رؤيته للواقع، والطبيعة الخلابة. وظف محمود تيمور الوصف بطريقة تنقل المكان وكأنه انعكاس للواقع؛ من خلال استخدام اللون-بدرجاته المختلفة-والصوت والحركة.
