A Study of the Effect of Semantics of Phrasal Verbs Acquisition on English Learners

Overview
This paper aims at identifying one of the most important problems that encounter the English language learners- semantics of phrasal verbs. After giving a survey of literature written on the meaning and definition of phrasal verbs, a great deal of attention has been devoted to tackle the semantic features of phrasal verbs, i.e., whether they are literal or idiomatic. In addition, it studies the number of phrasal verbs through one of an important American writers- Mark Twain, by choosing one of his short stories (A Mysterious Visit). The results of the semantical analysis of phrasal verbs presented based on Quirk`s et.al (1985) explanations and claims. In the light of the findings of the study, it has been found that phrasal verbs are semantically different and are very difficult to acquire.
