تهدف هذه الدراسة للتعرف على تطور النظام الحضري في محافظة أربد للفترة 1961- 2015م، وقياس مدى التغير في نسب سكان الحضر والتباين المكاني واتجاهاته. كما هدف البحث إلى التعرف على مدى ملائمة قاعدة الرتبة والحجم على مستوى التجمعات الحضرية في محافظة أربد، والكشف عن إذا ما كان هنالك هيمنة حضرية في النظام الحضري لمحافظة أربد. وقد استخدم البحث المنهج التاريخي والمنهج الوصفي التحليلي لمعالجة البيانات الديموغرافية بالأساليب والمعادلات الإحصائية مثل (نسبة الحضر، قاعدة زيبف \"Zipf\"، ودليل الهيمنة الحضرية). وأظهرت نتائج الدراسة أن أعداد المراكز الحضرية تطورت من مركزين حضريين عام 1961 ليصل إلى 68 مركزا حضريا للعام 2015، وتزايد نسبة سكان الحضر من 32% إلى 92.4% لنفس الفترة الزمنية، ووجود مدينتين مهيمنتين هما مدينة الرمثا ومدينة أربد حسب قاعدة الهيمنة الحضرية، وأوصت الدراسة إلى ضرورة إعادة النظر في المعيار الإحصائي المعتمد للتمييز بين الريف والحضر، وتوجيه برامج التنمية نحو المدن التي شهدت معدلات نمو أكثر من غيرها كمدن ايدون والصريح وبيت راس.
