يناقش هذا البحث جملة من الآراء حول طبيعة اللغة المهرية، ويهدف إلى رصد لخطوط العامة لأهم ملامحها في الصوت والمفردة والتركيب، ويستعرض نماذج من حقولها الدلالية مقارنة مع العربية، محاولا الوقوف على إشكال دائر بين الدارسين حول اللغة المهرية: أ لغة هي أم لهجة؟ والأقرب- من وجهة نظر الباحث- ومن خلال العديد من المفردات والدلالات- أنها لغة من اللغات العربية قديمة، أو لمزيج من لغات يمنية قديمة وللعربية الفصحى- أيضا- إذ إن معظم أصواتها والعديد من مفرداتها وتراكيبها وحقولها الدلالية لها صلة مباشرة أو غير مباشرة باللغة العربية الفصحى.
