The Role of Economic Instruments in Supporting Integrated Solid Waste Management Strategies

Overview

This research is concerned with the solid waste management problem. Since, the generation and accumulation of such wastes is increasing year by year, due to factors such as the economic growth, urbanization and rapid population growth. It has become a critical area of practice and research due to the increasing environmental concerns of pollution and resources shortage. Hence, in order to meet such challenges, there is a need to develop a better technology or method through which the waste can be converted into useful material. The Integrated solid waste management (ISWM) system is a broad strategy that involves several activities at a higher level of final disposal which aims at extracting the maximum practical benefits from products and generating the minimum amount of waste. However, the incorporation of such concepts entails an enabling environment that can promote such sustainable solutions. Economic Instruments (EI) can be used as incentives as to promoting such concepts. The research concluded that Economic Instruments have drawn increasing attention in recent years as important tools that do not substitute but complement, strengthen, and reinforce the country's overall environmental policy setting while simultaneously contribute to its sustainability. Thus, the research main recommendation was that EI have to be compatible with the national regulatory objectives, existing legislation, as well as the long term national environmental plans if it is to be effective as an incentive to ensure waste minimization, & waste recovery and promote and encourage more recycling effort. Also, they shouldn't be regarded as a \"stand alone\" policy packages.
