يعتبر التسلح أحد أبرز المحاور التي تركز عليها وتهتم بها الكثير من الدراسات، لاسيما الدراسات السياسية والجيو-استراتيجية والاقتصادية والعسكرية، وذلك لتعلقه بقوة الكثير من الدول واقتصادياتها، فضلاً عن اتصاله بالسلام الدولي. الأمر الذي قاد إلى بروز ظاهرة السباق نحو التسلح التي أصبحت تهدد الاستقرار والأمن الدوليين، وهو ما أدى إلى تبلور فكرة نزع السلاح والحد من التسلح والرقابة على التسلح في أوساط المجتمع الدولي، حيث حظي مفهوم نزع السلاح بأهمية كبيرة لدى المجتمع الدولي، وأضحى أحد أبرز القضايا المطروحة للنقاش.
