تشكل المفاهيم حجر الزاوية الأساسي في كل موضوع، لهذا فإننا سنركز في دراستنا هذه على ظاهرة التنافس في العلاقات الدولية من جانب مفهوماتي، وقد ارتأينا في هذا الصدد تقديم تعريف للتنافس وكذلك توضيح أهم الاختلافات الموجودة بينه وبين بعض المفاهيم المشابهة له في حقل العلاقات الدولية، وذلك حتى يتسنى لنا ضبط مفهوم التنافس بشكل دقيق وإزالة الخلط الموجود بينه وبين بعض المفاهيم خاصة منها مفهوم الصراع. انطلاقا من كل ذلك سوف نقوم أولا بتناول أهم التعاريف المقدمة لكل مصطلح من المصطلحات القريبة من التنافس والتي تستخدم أحيانا كمرادفة له، ثم نقوم بعدها بتحديد أهم الفروقات فيما بينها.
