تناول البحث موضوع الأربعينات الحديثية، وبين أنها نوع من أنواع التصنيف الحديثي، مبرزا أنواعها، فالأربعينات قد تكون على شكل أحاديث أو أبواب، وقد تزيد عن هذا العدد، وقد تنقص، كما استعرض مظاهر تعدد مقاصد المؤلفين في التصنيف في الأربعينات الحديثية، مع بيان أن التأليف في هذا النوع جاء مع بدايات التصنيف في الحديث، وختم البحث بذكر مخطوطات علماء الغرب الإسلامي التي كانت لهم الحظوة الكبيرة في العناية بالحديث النبوي من حيث الرواية والدراية، مبينا أماكنها في خزائن المخطوطات.
