يجد الحجاج جذوره وخصائصه في كل أنماط الخطاب والخطابة، وما تشتمل عليه من جدل وتبرير وإقناع، فهو في الفلسفة يتوخى التأثير غير المباشر، بحيث يسعى لاصطناع مناهج جدلية تتجاوز الإقناع، إلى الاستقطاب، والتأثير، واستفزاز الخيال. وهو في البلاغة جملة من الأساليب والأدوات التي تسعى إلى استمالة المتلقي وإقناعه، في حين في اللسانيات فالحجاج فعل لغوي يقوم به المتكلم، فتنعكس آثاره واضحة في الملفوظ الذي ينتجه هذا النشاط.
