Overview
يتناول هذا البحث بالدراسة أحد أهم العناصر المعمارية ألا وهو العمود الذي استخدم في جميع الحضارات المختلفة، لتدعيم الأسقف أو الجدران أو المداخل، بهدف نقل أحمال العناصر الأفقية إلى القواعد والأساسات التي تنقلها بدورها إلى الأرض. اقتصر استخدام الأعمدة بشكل عام على القصور والمعابد، ولم يستخدم في منازل العامة، كما تنوعت الأماكن التي استخدمت فيها الأعمدة، فتم استخدامها لحمل الشرفات في العديد من القصور، استعملت أيضا لتدعيم الجدران وحمل الأسقف، وكان الاستخدام الأكبر لها في المداخل بشكل خاص. وقد جمعت الأعمدة في جميع هذه الوحدات المعمارية بين الجانب الوظيفي والجانب الزخرفي. ولكن في بعض المواقع تم استخدام الأعمدة لتؤدي دور زخرفي فقط.
