Overview
This research paper is mainly concerned with studying and analyzing the dramatic development of the absurd theatre, especially in the use of characteristics of realism while depicting human problems and societal issues with an absurd effect, as well as in the use of the dramatic techniques of the traditional theatre along with the dramatic techniques of the absurd theatre. Besides, it focuses on tracing the changes that occurred in this theatrical mode that contradicted the foundations of the theater of the absurd on which Samuel Beckett's play Waiting for Godot was based. Hence, the paper examines the aspects of the realistic trends that Harold Pinter used to reflect the absurd effect of his working-class world. The paper is divided into an Introduction, a body and a conclusion. The Introduction presents the theoretical framework of the paper. The body focuses in particular on the study of the setting, situation, main themes, characters, the plot as well as language in Pinter's The Dumb Waiter. His philosophy, which is centered on showing reality in its naked truth, is transmitted through different techniques exposing the absurd effect in the working-class lifestyle. The body is followed by a conclusion that summarizes the outcomes of the paper. To sum up, Pinter's work shows a realistic situation of real characters who behave in an absurd way or close the action with an absurd effect. His peculiar philosophy of understanding reality exposed how the absurd effect can exist In realistic situations of any society in the world.
