Overview
By shedding light on the variety of language aspects, exophony appears as a creative writing that enables one to question diverse notions, such as identity and nation. Yoko Tawada's Schwager in Bordeaux (2008) illustrates a complex nexus of gender, sexuality, colonial history, knowledge and language that this paper aims at analyzing, so as to decipher the role of exophony and the paradoxical position of the novel. This analysis will solely focus on the connection of the protagonist, Yuna, with her acquaintance, Renée, thereby proposing two angles of approach (the sexual and intellectual aspects of colonization), all of which are tied to language.
