Overview
This paper argues that the interaction between place and identity in Chokri Mabkhout's debut novel, Al-Taliani, is fundamental in the book. With special attention to space as an important thread in the novel's fictional fabric and an influence on shaping the identity of the characters, it will suggest a reading of the dynamics of this interaction and its role in drawing the characters of the protagonists, Abdenasser and Zina, as they oscillate between private/ public spaces and collective/individual identities within the general spatiotemporal world of the novel.
