يدعي ريتشارد سويدبيرغ (Richard Swedberg) أن التنظير يأتي قبل النظرية في العملية الفعلية التي ينطوي عليها إنتاج الأعمال العلمية في العلوم الاجتماعية. ويقترح أن يأتي التنظير قبل النظرية. ويؤكد أن مشروع التنظير يحتاج إلى الاستعارة والخيال، إلى جانب الأدبيات الكلاسيكية التي يمكن أن تكون مفيدة في عملية التنظير السوسيولوجي، كما أن التنظير ليس عملا فرديا فقط، وإنما هو عمل يحتاج إلى التفاعل والمشاركة من طرف الجماعة العلمية (مدرسين، طلبة، باحثين) وغيرهم.
