تتناول هذه الدراسة التدوين التاريخي كنموذج حي للفكر السائدة لدى الحضارات من بينها الحضارة العربية الإسلامية من خلال شخصية المؤرخ الجغرافي شهاب الدين أحمد بن يحي بن فضل الله العمري (ت 749 ه/1349 م)؛ وذلك بالتعريف عليه من حيث مولده ونشأته، شيوخه وتلاميذه، مكانته العلمية، آراء العلماء عنه، مؤلفاته التي داع صيتها إلى يومنا هذا ولولاها لما وصلتنا العديد من الحقائق التاريخية من جهة، ومن جهة أخرى توضيح إسهاماته في الكتابة التاريخية الجغرافية بدراسة مؤلفه الموسوم بـــ \"مسالك الأبصار في ممالك الأمصار\"؛ الذي تطرق فيه إلى تاريخ الممالك المشرقية والمغربية خلال العصور الوسطى.
